The Department of Fisheries & Aquaculture Technology was established by Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (A.T.E.I.Th) in the city of Nea Moudania, Prefecture of Chalkidiki, in September of 2000. The operation of the new department was funded by National and European Community resources in the frame of the 2nd Community Support Framework of the Operational Program for Education and Initial Vocational Training.

In July 2011, the general assembly of ATEITh approved its denomination to Department of Applied Aquatic Sciences recognizing it as the only Institution providing Higher Education Studies in the area of Aquatic Environment Sciences in Northern Greece.

The Department is organized into three sections, a) Section of Surface Waters, b) Section of Fisheries and Aquaculture and c) Section of Biological & Fishery Applications. Undergraduate studies cover the fields of exploitation, monitoring and control of the Aquatic environment, Fisheries, Aquaculture and Fish Processing technology.

The students are practising in the laboratories of Chemistry, Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Chemical Oceanography, Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, Instrumental Analysis and Bio-toxins, Physiology and Farming of Aquatic Organisms, Biology of Fishes, Fish Farming, Shellfish, Physical Oceanography and Marine Biology, Hydraulics, Aquatic Pollution and Toxicology, Phytoplankton, Aquarium Science, Inland Water Ecosystems, Chemistry and Biotechnology of Aquatic Natural Products, Fish Quality Control and Technology and Pollution Control Chemistry and Technology.

Specific research projects have been developed οn monitoring the water quality, studies on hydrodynamics and physicochemical characteristics of the marine environment, the development of administrative and environmental interventions in the circulation of water in areas of aquaculture, the recording and the evaluation of consumers opinions for the standardized fisheries products, the artificial reproduction and experimental culture of fishes, the study on the effect of karotenoids on the color of cultured fishes, the study and genetic identification of aquatic species, the recording of commercial shellfish and the development of analytical and molecular methods for the assessment of bio-toxins and cyanobacteria.
